We are planning our “always popular” field tour of abandoned mine lands, reclamation, and AMD remediation sites for Tuesday, October 20th. If you would like to go, you will need to purchase a separate “field tour” registration from the registration page. A boxed lunch is included.
The tour will be limited based on the number of available seats on the bus. Registrations for the field tour are first come, first served and often sell out before the regular conference registration deadline. These are not automatically included with any sponsorship.
The tour bus will leave the Holiday Inn at 8AM for the:
- Donaldson AMR and Good Spring improvement project,
- Rausch Creek Active AMD Treatment System, a ~50-year-old DEP-run lime silo treating all of Rausch Creek,
- Drive under the conveyor of Reading Anthracite’s New St. Nicholas Breaker active since 1963,
- Overlook the Wadesville Pit, a 400-foot-deep active strip mine where the Mammoth Vein folded over itself 4 times,
- Lunch @ Reading Famous Outdoor Darkwater Trailhead,
- Otto AMD Passive Treatment System operated by Schuylkill Conservation District, and
- Rausch Cr. Generating guided tour of active cogen plant.
The tour bus will return to the Holiday Inn by 4PM.
Note: Attendees will be required to walk ~1/2 mile total on level terrain to see some of the treatment systems. It will be a full-day tour, and participants are encouraged to wear appropriate clothing for Eastern Pennsylvania weather in mid-October and sturdy, comfortable shoes. A boxed lunch is included, and bring along some binoculars especially for the Wadesville Pit!

More to come as we work out the details…
